When the City of Calgary set out to transform Midfield Heights into a vibrant mixed-use urban village, their vision extended beyond buildings and infrastructure. The goal was to create a complete community that would attract families and feel welcoming from day one. Thoughtfully designed amenities were central to that vision, with a playground identified early as a key anchor in the community. By investing in play upfront, the City created an immediate destination for early residents while helping future homeowners envision life in the neighbourhood.
Parkworks was brought in to supply and install a unique play space designed for both immediate impact and long-term performance.
The Challenge
The City had a clear vision in mind: create a pollinator-themed playground that felt cohesive, natural, and engaging for all ages.
The space needed to support a wide range of play, from early childhood exploration to more dynamic, skill-based activities for older kids. It also had to balance imaginative design with durability, ensuring it would provide an exciting place to play for years to come.
Being installed ahead of the surrounding development, the playground required careful coordination and planning to ensure long-term site readiness and seamless integration into a neighbourhood still taking shape.
Parkworks worked closely with LA West (Calgary) Inc. and Aecon Group Inc. to align on design intent, site preparation, and installation timing to make sure the project moved smoothly.
The Solution
arkworks curated a play experience that brings the pollinator theme to life through both form and function!
A custom beehive structure from KOMPAN’s Design Studio anchors the space, creating a distinctive play destination for younger children. Surrounding it, a mix of other KOMPAN play features introduce challenge, movement, and discovery:
- Double Wizards Tower with spider net for climbing and connection
- Bee Springer and Spinner Bowl to reinforce the theme through play
- Balance Posts with rope to support coordination and skill-building
Robinia natural wood elements add warmth and durability, strengthening the playground’s connection to nature while ensuring long-term performance.
The Implementation
Parkworks worked closely with project partners to ensure a smooth and efficient installation from start to finish. Early coordination helped confirm site readiness and proper layout before equipment arrived, reducing risk and keeping the project on track. Each element was installed with careful attention to placement, safety, and overall flow, bringing the design to life as intended.
The space was completed with vibrant pour-in-place (PIP) rubber surfacing featuring playful graphics that carry the pollinator theme across the entire play space.
The Outcome
The result is a bold, welcoming play space that delivers on every level. Designed for children of all ages, it strengthens the identity of Midfield Heights while creating an immediate sense of community. For early residents, it offers a place to gather, connect, and play. For future homeowners, it reflects a neighbourhood built with intention and care.
By combining custom design with proven play systems, Parkworks delivered a playground that is both distinctive and built to last.
