The City of Maple Ridge, a rapidly growing city committed to increasing public access to green, social, and active spaces, knew they wanted to create a new park and playground space for residents of the Pazarena neighbourhood. Pazarena Park is the result of that decision, creating a sparkling new gem of a park that will provide residents with endless hours of fun for years to come!
Early in the park planning phase, the city turned to the community to conduct surveys on engagement, gathering input from residents on the park's concepts and design. Residents were able to provide insights and feedback on what they liked and didn’t like and were able to put in requests for the types of playground equipment they wanted to see in the new space.
Collaboration like this ensures that community members feel confident in the recreation spaces being built in their neighbourhoods. After conducting their engagement surveys, the City of Maple Ridge created park design that offers something for everyone, including:
- covered seating areas
- accessible pathways
- scooter track
- a playground that provides fun for all ages and abilities
Once the design was finalized, the City of Maple Ridge brought the Parkworks team on board to bring the playground space to life!
The Challenge
Armed with the community’s feedback, the city of Maple Ridge had a few specific requests for Parkworks when it came to deciding what features to include in the playground. First, the space had to offer play equipment and opportunities for all age groups, so careful consideration went into choosing the right playground features.
Parkworks, working closely with their in-house design team, provided recommendations on features that would work well for the playground space and would maximize play value. After some initial discussions, the city and landscape architect chose to proceed with primarily KOMPAN playground equipment for the space, with one of their main requests being a KOMPAN Cliff Rider. They wanted to have it customized to really boost the play value of the feature, so the Parkworks team coordinated closely with KOMPAN to ensure the city’s vision was reflected in the design.
The Solution
After some initial back and forth to make product selections and ensure that the features chosen for the playground space would check the boxes of everything the city was looking for, the Parkworks team got to work!
Construction on the playground equipment began in June 2025 with the custom Cliff Rider being installed, alongside a custom, curved embankment slide. A Birds Nest Swing provides an inclusive, accessible feature to the space that can be enjoyed by all, while a Craisy Daisy is perfect for smaller children who want to get in on the playground fun!
KOMPAN’s Cliff Rider is the perfect addition to Pazarena Park. Described as wildly thrilling, Cliff Rider attracts school age children with repeated loops of action. It trains muscle force, tension, timing, and sequencing movements, challenging kids at every turn, and helping them build self-confidence as they play. It’s a standout addition that encourages kids to push their limits while having an unforgettable time outdoors.
The Implementation
Like any playground installation, there were some challenges that occurred throughout the process, but overall, the implementation of the playground features went well. The Parkworks team worked closely with KOMPAN and the City of Maple Ridge to ensure that all features were installed correctly and would be safe for use. Parkworks provided support throughout the entire installation process, and Maple Ridge was incredibly happy with the final outcome.
The Outcome
Pazarena Park will hold an official grand opening in Spring 2026 but is already open to the public and is being enjoyed by residents of Maple Ridge. Community members are thrilled to have a new green, social, and active space in their neighbourhood, and additional features such as a covered picnic area and scooter track provide hours of fun for the entire family.
This was a particularly exciting project for the Parkworks team, as it marked the first KOMPAN Cliff Rider to be installed in the Lower Mainland! Despite the challenges that arose throughout the project, the Parkworks team remained flexible and committed to providing the client with legendary service.
The result? A beautiful playground that is part of a larger green space that is already becoming a gathering place for the community.
