Case Study: Skaha Lake Splash Pad

Location: Penticton, BC
Project Type: Community Splash Pad Revitalization
Highlights:
- Misting Zone – Custom misting blocks add an extra cooling effect for the hot summer months.
- Splash Pad Revitalization – Replaced the existing splash pad with modern features.
- Fun for Everyone – Designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind.
After serving the community of Penticton, BC with big splashes for more than 20 years, it was decided that the existing Skaha Lake Splash Pad would be decommissioned and replaced with a brand-new one, full of modern and accessible features. The original splash pad was installed by Parkworks’ splashiest partner, Waterplay, so it was only fitting that they provided the new splash pad features to help bring the revitalized space to life.
The Challenge
The original splash pad was built by the Penticton Rotary Club, and when they saw that it was in need of revitalization, they began to fundraise and petition the city to upgrade the park. Once the revitalization was approved by the city, the new splash pad design was developed in conjunction with the En’owkin Centre, a local First Nation consultant.
Accessibility and inclusivity were two of the main factors worked into the newly designed splash pad, as everyone involved wanted to create a splashy space that could be enjoyed by all members of the community. It was very important that the splash pad included a gathering space that could be used outside of seasonal operating hours, so incorporating a seating element was essential.
With excess water from the splash pad running into a local stream, an important environmental consultation was required before the project could begin. This flow of water was maintained with the new construction; however, a de-chlorination system was added to help reduce the impact on the environment.

The Solution
Many different groups were involved throughout the process of bringing this splash pad revitalization to life, and all that collaboration resulted in a fantastic, inclusive design. The Skaha Lake Splash Pad features a roster of exciting splash pad elements, including:
- POI Spinner
- Spiral Tunnel
- Water Weaver 2
- Morning Grass 1
- Sling Soaker
- Surf Stones
- An assortment of Ground Sprays
Various animal Fellows provide kids the perfect opportunity to splash each other while hiding from splashes themselves. While the splash pad is packed full of fun and thrilling features, they are spread out across the space, providing lots of room for those with mobility aids to easily maneuver around and join in the fun.
A large seating wall was designed to provide the gathering space that had been requested, and custom misters were built into columns within the wall, creating a cooling space for parents and guardians who might not want to get on the splash pad themselves.
There were many different groups involved in bringing this splash pad revitalization to the finish line and having the support of the En’owkin Centre and Ecora, who was the engineer and landscape architect for the project, really helped create an accessible space that offers something for every age and ability.

The Implementation
When it came to the removal of the existing, outdated splash pad and the installation of the new one, the project as a whole went smoothly. Though most projects come with some challenges, the ones faced with this installation were limited and allowed for an efficient timeline from start to finish. Parkworks provided their installation services to help bring the splash pad to life.
Interactive water features really stand out in this space, with all sorts of different splashes being sent in all sorts of directions. The Sling Soaker builds anticipation for kids seeking big splashes, while the POI Spinner creates a unique opportunity for kids to engage with the feature directly and explore how water moves. All the Fellows, the Turtle, Fox, and Fish, are playful creatures that encourage children to play together, allowing them to tell stories as they move through the splash pad.
The Outcome
The newly revitalized Skaha Lake Splash Pad is a vibrant space doling out big splashes and even bigger smiles! Showcasing unique water features and an accessible, inclusive design, this space has been transformed into a cooling hub that will provide the community with a place to beat the heat this summer, and beyond. The addition of seating, misting features, and new landscaping has transformed what was once an outdated space into an exciting hub that will continue to serve the city of Penticton and surrounding communities for years to come.
Fully re-imagined and promising excitement with every splash, the revitalized Skaha Lake Splash Pad will host its official grand opening this summer and has already proved itself to be a favourite spot within the community.
The Parkworks team loved seeing the custom misting features implemented, as they are new, unique, and will help everyone visiting the splash pad stay cool, not just the children. The Sling Soaker is always a great addition to any splash pad, and the Fish Fellow helps connect the space with the beach of Skaha Lake, which is just steps away.
Fun Fact! Parkworks’ Regional Sales Manager, Mitchell Taubensee played on the original Skaha Lake Splash Pad when he was a kid, and fast forward to today, Mitchell was directly involved in bringing this revitalization project to life!
